Mitchell Men Claim NECC Champions Cup

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- Mitchell College earned the 2017-18 New England Collegiate Conference Champions Cup on the men's side for its top performances in conference regular-season and tournament play.

It marked the second NECC Champions Cup for the Mitchell men since 2014. The Mariners (.672) finished atop the league following regular season play in men's soccer and baseball and also claimed tournament titles in both sports. Southern Vermont College (.612) placed second followed by Elms College (.603) in third.

Points are awarded based on finish during regular season play and tournament performance. Institutions are then ranked based on their percentage of points they scored based on sport sponsorship and tournament qualification.

The Mariners claimed two NCAA berths this season on the men's side. Mitchell captured its first NECC title in men's soccer, posting nine wins and making its NCAA debut in head coach Damian Houlden's third season. Under seventh-year head coach Travis Beausoleil, Mitchell baseball (30-8 overall) won its sixth NECC title and earned the program's fifth NCAA bid.

The men's basketball team, under the direction of head coach Todd Peretz, finished in a three-way tie for second place during the regular season. The Mariners then advanced to the semifinals of the NECC Championship before bowing out of the tournament.

The men's cross country, golf and lacrosse teams each competed in their respective NECC Championships. The Mariners placed sixth in both cross country and golf while men's lacrosse was eliminated in the final seconds of its tournament semifinals match-up.

The Champions Cup on the women's side went to Elms College for the first time in its history. The Blazers were both regular season and postseason champions in volleyball, field hockey and lacrosse.
