Mariners Honor Academics at Special Event

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College Department of Athletics honored the academic achievements of its top student-athletes on Wednesday night at halftime of the men's basketball game.

A total of 40 student-athletes were recognized as either a Top 25 Student-Athlete Scholar or a Top 10 Freshman Scholar. The first award is presented to student-athletes, sophomore status or above, with the highest cumulative grade-point averages. The second award, created this year, recognizes those student-athletes with the highest GPA in their first semester of college.

Student-athletes who were named to the Top 25 all sported a cumulative GPA of 3.49 or higher. The Top 10 featured 15 student-athletes (due to ties), all with a semester GPA of 3.8 or higher. 

Thanks to the efforts of students, faculty, staff, coaches and administrators, Mitchell's student-athletes posted a department grade-point average of 3.04 for fall 2019. A total of 129 student-athletes—representing more than half the student-athlete population—currently maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
