Baseball Splits with Becker College in NECC Doubleheader

 

Worcester, Mass- Becker College and Mitchell College split their New England Collegiate Conference baseball double header today, by the final scores of 6-5 and 10-0.

In game one, Mitchell jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, capped by Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn) and Andrew Langlais (Ledyard, Conn) RBI doubles. 

In the bottom of the first, Jairo Valdez (Lynn, Mass) put the Hawks on the board when he scored on a wild pitch.

With runners on first and third after back to back Hawks errors, John McGarry (New London, Conn) grounded into a double play, allowing another Mitchell run to score.

The Hawks chipped away at the Mitchell lead in the bottom of the third. Jairo Valdez started things off by driving a one out double into right field. Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass) followed with an RBI single up the middle. Dan Briand (Northbirdge, Mass) put the Hawks within one when he doubled to right field, scoring Joe Corey from second base.

In the top of the fifth, John McGarry extended the Mariner lead with a two out RBI single through the right side.

The Mariners held a 5-3 lead before Becker rallied back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif) led off the inning with a walk. Cody Carlson (Barre, VT) reached base on an error. After stealing third base, Kandel scored a wild pitch, putting the Hawks within one.  Joe Corey tied the game with an RBI triple into the right field gap. With the speedy Corey on third base, the Hawks tried to steal home but Adam Deltgen (Norwich, Conn) threw a pitchout, nailing Corey at homeIn the top of the 8th, Matthew Radke (Terryville, Conn) dropped an RBI single into right field to secure the Mariners second conference win.

Errick Maddern (West Haven, Conn) suffered his first loss in the NECC. Maddern pitched a complete game, allowing just two earned runs. Adam Deltgen earned the win, with a complete game as he struck out seven Hawks.

Game two was dominated by freshman Pierce Onthank (Fairfield, Conn), who pitched a complete game one hitter for the host Hawks.  The lone Mariner hit was earned by Andrew Langlais.

Jairo Valdez carried the Hawks with three hits in game two. Geoff Sinnott (Coventry, RI) chipped in with three RBI's.

The Mariners fell to 7-17 overall and 2-4 in the NECC, while Becker improved to 12-9-1 overall and 6-2 in the NECC.
