Mitchell Baseball Falls to Coast Guard in Regular Season Finale

NORWICH, CONN.-(4/29/09)-Junior John Jeffares' (St. Petersburg, Fla.) two-run single capped a four-run sixth as Coast Guard rallied for a season ending 5-4 win over Mitchell in a non-conference game between the two New London schools played a Dodd Stadium a game in which seven seniors played their final collegiate game for the Bears.

Coast Guard (7-23) struck first as senior Thomas Cameron (Portland, Ore.), a first year player, making his first career start, drove in his first career run, an RBI ground out  in the second as the Bears took a 1-0 lead.

Mitchell (10-19) tied the game in the third as sophomore Joseph Ramon (Converse, Tex.) led off with a double and came around to tie the game on a wild pitch.

The Mariners took the lead in the fourth as sophomore John McGarry (Waterford, Conn.) led off with triple and scored on a single by junior Jared Bishop (Moodus, Conn.) for a 2-1 lead.

Mitchell added two more in the sixth on a two-run double by sophomore Clayton Boegler (Somerset, Mass.) for a 4-1 lead.

The Bears erupted for four runs to take the lead in the home half of the sixth as senior Bill Birch (Hamilton, N.J.) singled, senior pitcher Kevin Thomas (Milford, Mass.), had a pinch hit single in his first career at-bat, senior Kevin Keefe (Belmont, Mass.) ripped an RBI single before freshman Joe Petry (Worcester, Mass.)was walked with the bases loaded to pull the Bears to within 4-3 before Jeffares delivered the eventual game winner.

Coast Guard senior Brian Yurovich (Marlboro, Mass.) was robbed of a grand slam as sophomore leftfielder Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) reached over the wall to make a spectacular catch to end the inning and keep the score 5-4.

Senior Pete Schofield (Warwick, R.I.) started for Coast Guard and pitched five solid inning allowing just three hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out two. Sophomore Jesse Karr (Milan, Mich.) (2-4) allowed two runs in the sixth, but did not allow a  hit over the final three innings to pick up the win.

Sophomore Cody Faddis (Muskogee, Okla.) (0-3) started for Mitchell and went 5 2/3 innings allowing the five runs all earned to take the loss. Junior Matthew Osgood, who gave up the hit to Jeffares, the only hit he allowed, pitched the final two thirds for Mitchell.

Mitchell (10-19) travels to Southern Vermont College for their NECC semifinal game against the tournament-host Southern Vermont Mountaineers on Friday, May 1st at 11:00 am.
