Baseball Splits CUNY Doubleheader with Staten Island

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team pulled out an exciting win in the first game of a doubleheader with Staten Island, 9-8, and they fell in the second game, 11-5.  The Mariners rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one on a two-RBI double by Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.) and an RBI by John McGarry (Waterford, Conn.).

Staten Island exploded in the top of the fifth inning for seven runs, as took a 7-2 lead.  The Mariners would come right back in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the gap and make the score 7-6.  Matthew Hagen (Boulder, Colo.) hit a two-RBI double, and Perillo and Andrew Langlais (Ledyard, Conn.) each singled in the inning.  The Dolphins would score one run in the top of the sixth and hold the Mariners in the bottom of the sixth, to take a 8-6 lead into the final inning.

Adam Deltgen (Norwich, Conn.) went the distance and picked up the win for Mitchell, as he gave up nine hits, five earned runs, and struck out two. 

Perillo finished the game with a double and two singles, while Paul Martinez (New London, Conn.) and Hagan each had two hits in the victory.

In game two, Staten Island scored early and often as they scored seven runs in the first two innings of play.  The Dolphins also scored at least one run in each of the last three innings of the game to secure an 11-5 victory.   Mitchell scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on singles by McGarry, Langlais, and John Migliaccio (Mahopac, N.Y.).  And the home team would score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on singles by Ethan Graynor (Leonia, N.J.) and Joseph Ramon (Converse, Tex.) and a sacrifice fly by Martinez.  The visiting Dolphins were able to close out the victory in the bottom of the seventh on two ground-outs and a strikeout.

Matthew Osgood (Brookfield, Conn.) took the loss and pitched seven innings and gave up seven hits and only four earned runs.

The Mariners are now 5-15 overall and 3-5 in CUNY conference play and they are back on the diamond on Wednesday, April 15th when they host City College of New York for a 1:30pm doubleheader.
