Baseball Loses Slugfest to Husson

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Mitchell College baseball team came up on the short end of a nine-inning slugfest against Husson College on Wednesday, falling 23-21 at the RussMatt Invitational at Chain of Lakes Parks.

Both teams put a lot of crooked numbers up on the scoreboard as Mitchell (2-1 overall) suffered its first setback of the season. The Mariners plated a season-high 21 runs on 20 hits but couldn't protect any of their leads. Husson (3-2 overall) went ahead for good thanks to a six-run eighth inning and then held Mitchell to a scoreless ninth to end the marathon game that lasted four hours and 20 minutes.

Mitchell jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning but gave up nine runs in the second to fall behind. The lead changed hands a total of five times in the game.

Freshman Anthony Santiago went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI while senior Jeff Perillo went 3-for-5 with two walks. Senior Drew Rossi drove in four runs to lead the offense and finished with a pair of doubles and a single in the game.

Mitchell will close out competition at the RussMatt Invitational on Friday, March 11 with a doubleheader against Wentworth Institute of Technology. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
