Baseball Plays to 3-3 Stalemate with Johnson & Wales

NEW LONDON, Conn. – A 12-inning non-conference battle between the Mitchell College and Johnson & Wales University baseball teams finished as a 3-3 tie on Wednesday, as the game was called due to darkness.

Both teams had chances to win in extra innings. After leaving the bases loaded in the ninth, the Mariners (8-3-1 overall) stranded a runner at second in the 10th and left three runners on base in the 12th. The Wildcats (7-9-1 overall) put two runners in scoring position in the top of the 12th but failed to bring them home.

Mitchell took an early lead on an RBI single by junior Gus Maclao in the first inning. Johnson & Wales grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third when a single by Zach Boyes plated a pair of runs, but Maclao tied the game in the bottom of the frame with another RBI single.

The Mariners went ahead 3-2 on a solo homer by freshman Anthony Santiago in the sixth, the first of his collegiate career. The Wildcats answered with a solo shot of their own in the eighth off the bat of Boyes, who finished 2-for-5 with three RBI in the game.

Each squad used five pitchers in the game. Johnson & Wales starter Alex MacKay lasted 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three. Mitchell freshman Travis Gembecki pitched 5.0 innings of relief and allowed one run on two hits. The Mariners' staff held the Wildcats to only six hits over the 12 innings.

Mitchell will next host Becker College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 at noon.
