Baseball Drops Two at Cusic Classic


FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Mitchell College baseball team dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday, falling 16-2 to North Park University and 6-5 to St. Lawrence University.

Mitchell (1-3 overall) trailed 5-3 heading into the ninth inning against St. Lawrence but rallied for two runs to tie the game. The Saints, however, loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and scored the winning run on a walk.

Tyler Shultis, Will Charkowsky and Gavin LaLima each finished with a pair of hits to pace the Mariners at the plate. Starting pitcher Mike Sturges lasted 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits.

In the day's first game against North Park, Mitchell finished with nine hits but managed to score only two runs. Senior Tommy Derosier had two hits and an RBI to lead the way.

Mitchell returns to action at the Cusic Classic on Monday, March 12 against Scanton at 10 a.m.
