Baseball Tops Newbury 8-3

JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team took the rubber match of its three-game series against Newbury College by an 8-3 final on Monday night.

Freshman pitcher Mike Sturges tossed a complete-game gem to earn his first collegiate victory. He scattered nine hits and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out three.

Freshman Rafael Garcia led the Mariners at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and game-high four RBI. Junior Will Charkowsky and freshman Drew Doyle each finished with a pair of hits.

Mitchell fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but posted two runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Garcia delivered an RBI single to tie the game before Doyle followed with a single to left to drive in the go-ahead run.

The Mariners also hung up crooked numbers in the next two innings. Garcia drove in a pair with a double in the fifth while senior Tommy Derosier plated a run in the sixth with a base knock. Freshman Gavin LaLima also picked up an RBI in the frame to increase the Mitchell lead to 6-1.

Newbury battled back for two runs in the bottom of the sixth but would get no closer. Sturges yielded only one hit over the final three innings to lock down the win.

Mitchell (3-8 overall, 2-1 NECC) returns to action at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.
