Baseball Sweeps Past Maine Presque Isle

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team picked up a pair of victories over the University of Maine Presque Isle on Monday afternoon, winning by final scores of 4-3 and 6-0 in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

In the opener, Mitchell junior Kevin Toro delivered a two-run walk-off single to complete a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Toro went 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader to lead the Mariners. Junior Troy Stango then tossed 7.0 shutout innings in the second game as the Mariners plated six runs over the first three innings to seize control.

Mitchell (11-9-1 overall) will next play a doubleheader at Daniel Webster College on Saturday, April 12 at noon. Maine Presque Isle (1-16 overall) returns to action at Southern Maine Community College on Friday, April 11 at 2 p.m.

Game 1 – Mitchell 4, Maine Presque Isle 3

Mitchell took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when an errant throw on a steal attempt allowed Toro to score from third base. The margin didn't last long as the Owls struck for three runs in the second. Maine Presque Isle loaded the bases with one out and plated runs when Josiah Brazier and Cam Morrell each drew walks, with the additional run coming courtesy of a Mitchell fielding error.

The Owls held the 3-1 lead all the way to the seventh as starting pitcher Dylan Worster kept the Mariners off the base paths. However, a pair of errors put the first two Mitchell batters aboard in the seventh, and Worster issued his first and only walk of the day to load the bases. A single by junior Gavin LaLima brought in the first run to make it 3-2, and Toro followed with a single to right field to bring in the tying and winning runs.

Worster (0-3 overall) allowed only one earned run on eight hits and struck out two. Mitchell senior Jeff Dowling picked up his first win of the season in relief, pitching a hitless seventh inning while striking out one. Junior Ryan Goodwin tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Mariners in the game after starter Johnny Cabrera was chased in the second inning.

Game 2 – Mitchell 6, Maine Presque Isle 0

Stango (2-0 overall) was the story in the nightcap, giving up only three hits without issuing a walk and striking out two. He faced only two batters over the minimum and didn't allow a runner past first base the entire game.

The Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by senior Marc Dorsi and a sacrifice fly by classmate Kenneth Olszewski. Mitchell later added four runs in the third, plating the first two on a double by junior Rafael Garcia and the second two on consecutive errors by the Owls.

Brazier (0-2 overall) got the starting nod for the Owls and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings. He also had one of his team's three hits at the plate along with Justin Bergeron and Adam Begos.
