Baseball's Garcia Earns ECAC Weekly Honors

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Rafael Garcia was named Corvias ECAC Division III New England Player of the Week for the sport of baseball, as announced by the conference late Tuesday night.

Garcia, who was also tabbed NECC Player of the Week on Monday, swung a hot bat and helped the Mariners to a 3-0 record last week that included a doubleheader sweep of Lesley University. The junior third baseman batted .700 for the week and had multiple hits in all three games, finishing with three doubles, a homer, five RBI and five runs scored while slugging 1.300 for the week. In the opener against Lesley he swatted two doubles and knocked in a pair of runs, and in the finale he plated three runs and drilled his first home run of the season.

Garcia is the second Mitchell baseball player to earn ECAC weekly honors this season, joining sophomore pitcher Tyler Shamas. In 26 games this season he is batting .306 with nine doubles, one home run, 15 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Mitchell (19-11-1 overall, 12-6 NECC) finished the regular season tied for first place in the NECC and will host the 2014 NECC Championship this weekend. The tournament winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
