Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Newbury

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team completed a series sweep of Newbury College on Monday morning with a 2-1 victory at the Cusic Classic.

Mitchell starter Axel De Jesus tossed a complete game and struck out eight over 9.0 innings. Newbury starter Jacob Pringle also went the distance and stuck out three. Both pitchers allowed seven hits in the contest.

Mitchell scored the only runs that DeJesus would need in the first. Kyle Hartenstein got things started with a one-out single, and the Mariners had runners at the corners with two outs when Hartenstein and Tyler Pina executed a double steal for the first run. Francis Prettitore then followed with single to plate Pina for the 2-0 lead.

The Nighthawks got a run back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Billy Stephen. But De Jesus allowed only four runners over the final six innings, only one of which got into scoring position.

Hartenstein and Prettitore each finished with a pair of hits in the game.

Mitchell improved to 4-0 on the season (3-0 NECC) and all four wins have come by one run. The Mariners will next face MacMurray College on Tuesday, March 8 at noon.
