Baseball Closes Out Opening Weekend With Win Over Elmira


FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Mitchell College baseball team wrapped up play at the Armstrong Invitational on Sunday with a 19-4 victory over Elmira College.

The Mariners (2-1 overall) pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of five Elmira errors to cruise to the win. Garet Griffin went 2-for-5 with a triple and five RBI while Francis Prettitore went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Starting pitcher Bryton Ferris did his part as well, giving up only four runs (zero earned) over 7.0 innings while striking out four.

Mitchell trailed 3-1 after two innings but took over the lead with a five-run third. Prettitore had a two-run double in the frame while Griffin and Jeremy Santos each added RBI singles.

The Mariners added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth before breaking the game open with a seven-run seventh. Mitchell sent 12 batters to the plate during the rally; Markus Melendez had a pair of singles in the inning while Griffin delivered a three-run triple.

Connor Dulin and JJ Ruehl each pitched a shutout inning of relief to close out the game.

Mitchell will next face Wheaton College (Ill.) at the Snowbird Classic on March 4 in Port Charlotte, FL.
