Baseball Takes Series Opener vs. Daniel Webster


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team posted a 21-3 victory over Daniel Webster College on Sunday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Alumni Field.

The Mariners pounded out a season-high 23 hits en route to their ninth straight win. Kyle Hartenstein went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and four runs scored to lead the attack. Tyler Pina also finished with four hits and recorded the 100th of his career in the first inning. 

Mitchell starter Eddie Santiago tossed 5.0 shutout innings and struck out six to improve to 4-1 on the season. The bullpen closed out the final four frames, with reliever Bryce Bedard pitching a hitless ninth to wrap up the win. 

Dan Mullins went 3-for-5 with a double, homer and three RBI to pace the Eagles. Starting pitcher Matt Dietrich lasted 2.2 innings and allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in the loss.

The Mariners put up 12 runs over the first three innings to seize control early. Peter Abate led off the first inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Francis Prettitore to get things started. A sac fly by Abate and an RBI double by Hartenstein made it 4-0 in the second, and Mitchell erupted for eight runs in the third to break it open. A two-run single by Tristan Hurley plated the final two runs of the rally for the 12-0 advantage.

Daniel Webster got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning on a two-run single through the left side of the infield by Mullins. Mitchell came right back to put up five more runs in the home half, as Hartenstein supplied a two-run triple and Hurley followed with an RBI single. Markus Melendez, who doubled in a run in the fifth, then plated a pair of runners with his second two-bagger of the day to make it 18-2.

The Mariners added three runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Prettitore and an RBI double by Pina. The Eagles got a run back in the eighth as Mullins went deep over the left-center fence for his second home run of the season.

Mitchell (17-6 overall, 6-1 NECC) will next play at Salve Regina University on Wednesday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m. Daniel Webster (1-11 overall, 0-6 NECC) returns to action at Southern Vermont College on Wednesday at noon.
