Hartenstein Becomes Hits Leader as Baseball Sweeps Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Mitchell College baseball team took a doubleheader from Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, winning by final scores of 12-4 and 10-2 in non-conference action at Rochford Field.

Mitchell senior Kyle Hartenstein finished with three hits in the sweep and became the school's all-time hits leader. He entered the day needing just one to claim the record as his own, and he got it in his second at bat of the opener. His two-run single in the second inning was the 191st hit of his career, surpassing the record held previously by Jeff Perillo '11.

Game 1 - Mitchell 12, Albertus Magnus 4

The Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the aforementioned second inning. In addition to Hartenstein's big hit, Eric Marriott and Garet Griffin also had RBI singles to fuel the offense.

Hartenstein led off the fourth inning with a double, setting the stage for another four-run frame for the Mariners. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Steven Pagan, and Jeremy Santos supplied a big two-run triple as the lead ballooned to 8-0.

After the Falcons scored three in the home half of the fourth to trim the deficit, Mitchell responded with four more runs in the fifth. Hartenstein plated his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to start the scoring spree, and Jack Finnegan's RBI single capped the rally and left the Mariners with a 12-3 advantage.

Drew Daley got the starting nod on the bump and pitched 4.0 innings to improve to 3-0. He struck out four while allowing three runs on five hits. Connor Dulin tossed 2.0 innings of shutout relief while Luke Nerney came in to record the final three outs.

Game 2 - Mitchell 10, Albertus Magnus 2

Griffin hit a solo homer in the first inning of the nightcap to give the Mariners another early lead. The Falcons tied the game in the bottom of the frame, but Mitchell put up three runs in the second inning and never looked back. Finnegan had an RBI single to start things off, and Rolando Marcano plated a run with a ground out.

The Mariners added a run in the third inning thanks to a wild pitch and two more in the fourth. The final three Mitchell runs came in the seventh. Hartenstein led off with a triple and scored on a double by Griffin, who then stole third and came home on a single by James Rangel.

Five pitchers combined for the victory, holding Albertus Magnus to just two hits in the contest. Newly-named captain Bryce Bedard was credited with the win and improved to 3-0 on the season.
