Baseball Completes Sweep of Newbury

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The Mitchell College baseball team completed a season sweep of Newbury College with a 9-3 victory in Saturday's series finale at the New England Baseball Complex.

Steven Pagan batted 3-for-4 with two RBI and Peter Abate finished 2-for-4 and drove in a pair to lead the Mariners at the plate. Eric Marriott went 3-for-5 with a double while Markus Melendez also had three hits and plated a run.

Nick Dorazio and Javi Martinez each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Newbury.

Tied at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, a Mitchell two-out rally produced a pair of runs. Melendez singled through the left side to put the Mariners in front, and later he scored on a single by Abate to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Mariners added another pair of runs in the fifth, again with the help of a two-out rally. RBI singles by Pagan and Jack Finnegan left Mitchell on top 5-1 at the midway point.

The Nighthawks cut into the deficit in the sixth. A two-out single by Dorazio cut the margin to 5-2. Later in the inning, a failed pickoff attempt scored Martinez for a 5-3 game.

The Mariners added a run in the seventh but got three more in the eighth to break things open. Melendez set the tone with a leadoff double and then scored on a single by Abate. Garet Griffin later plated a run with a sacrifice fly, and Mitchell's final run of the day came courtesy of an RBI single by Pagan.

Bryton Ferris gave up three runs (one earned) over 5.2 innings to earn the win, improving to 4-0 on the season. He struck out two and allowed five hits. Relievers Bryce Bedard and Brian Ricker each tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Newbury's Jake Pringle fell to 1-5 in his seven-inning effort.
