Baseball Gets Offense Going in Win at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College baseball team suffered a 23-7 setback to Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Mariners (20-5 overall) broke out for a season-high 23 hits and scored runs in all but two innings. Garet Griffin led the offense, going 5-for-6 with three RBI and five runs scored. Eric Marriott was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Peter Abate was 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Cam Cook went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate to lead the Bison, while Nick Roy was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Joe Assenzawent 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Xavier Quinones was 2-for-4 with a run scored. 

Mitchell jumped on top early as Griffin knocked in a pair of runs with a triple in the top of the first. Jack Finnegan followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 before the Bison even stepped up to the plate. 

After Nichols clawed back to get within one, the Mariners put up three runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Abate and a two-run double by Markus Melendez. Finnegan tacked on another run in the fourth with a sac fly, and Mitchell broke the game open behind a five-run fifth inning. Griffin had an RBI single in the rally while James Rangel added a two-run single to right-center. 

Mitchell put up three runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Jason West and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Hartenstein. Abate and Steven Pagan each supplied two-run singles to highlight a six-run eighth inning, and the Mariners scored their final two runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Devyn McCarty and Michael Santiago.

Hartenstein finished with two hits on the day and extended his hitting streak to 22 games, the longest in the school's Division III history. He eclipsed the mark set by Griffin last season.

Mitchell's Drew Daley earned a no-decision in the start, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Jeff Nicolosi picked up his first career win in relief, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with a strikeout. Cameron Albin and JJ Ruehl each worked an inning to wrap up the game.

Dario Tarquinio took the loss for the Bison, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts in two innings. Jackson White gave up a pair of runs in an inning of work, while Vincent Amato was touched for a run on two hits with a strikeout in one inning. The rest of the Nichols bullpen combined to give up 15 earned runs on 16 hits over the final five innings.

Mitchell will next play a doubleheader at Lesley University on Thursday, April 19 at 12:30 p.m.
