Thivierge Powers Baseball to Split with Misericordia

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Mitchell College baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Misericordia University at the Snowbird Classic, winning the opener 5-0 before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.

Roland Thivierge was nearly unhittable in his season debut, allowing only three singles in a complete-game shutout. The 2019 NECC Pitcher of the Year struck out four batters without issuing a walk and allowed only one runner past first base.

Mitchell (1-2 overall) will play a third and final game against Misericordia on Monday, March 2 at 1 p.m.

Game 1 - Mitchell 5, Misericordia 0

The Mariners staked Thivierge to a 1-0 lead in the first as Steve Cochrane doubled to right field to score Anthony Laureano all the way from first base. Mitchell added to the margin in the third thanks to a two-run triple by Dougie DelaCruz and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Diaz to make it 4-0. Josh Greene tacked on a RBI single in the sixth for the final margin.

Thivierge wouldn't need the extra run support as he cruised through the Misericordia lineup, scattering the three hits over 7.0 innings of work. The only Misericordia batter to reach scoring position did so in the second inning after singling, stealing second and reaching third on an error. Thivierge made it a moot point by getting the next batter to pop out to end the threat.

Game 2 - Misericordia 6, Mitchell 4

Mitchell fell behind 6-0 in the second game but rallied back to put up four runs to make it a game. Starting pitcher Jakari Pellegrini didn't make it out of the fourth inning as the Cougars racked up six runs on seven hits against him.

The Mariners scored a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to keep it close. Laureano delivered a RBI single in the comeback while Cochrane supplied a sacrifice fly. Mitchell had the tying run at the plate in both the fifth and seventh innings but came up short.

The Mitchell bullpen came through with a solid performance as Chris Vitale, Kenny Heon and Jeff Nicolosi combined for 3.1 scoreless innings.
