Baseball Tops Concordia 11-1

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team topped Concordia College (Minn.) by an 11-1 final on Wednesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational.

Ryan Solimine tossed a complete game and struck out seven to pick up his first win of the season while Jeremy Sagun and Jakari Pellegrini drove in three runs apiece to pace the offense. Sagun finished with a double and a triple in the game while Pellegrini added a homer.

After manufacturing a run in the first inning to go up 1-0, the Mariners batted around in the second and put up five more runs. Devyn McCarty got things started with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, and Sagun later added a bases-loaded double to plate three. Dougie DelaCruz capped the frame with an RBI single to make it 6-0.

Solimine retired the first six batters he faced but ran into trouble in the third. After allowing two hits to start the inning, he got a fly ball and a double play to escape unscathed.

Mitchell added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Steve Cochrane and tacked on four more in the fifth. McCarty knocked in his second run of the game with a single through the left side, and two batters later Pellegrini launched a three-run bomb over the right-field fence. The hit was also the first of his collegiate career.

Concordia's lone run came in the fifth inning on a leadoff homer by Mason Penske, one of six hits allowed by Solimine. The Mitchell right-hander didn't issue a walk over 7.0 innings and improved to 1-1 on the year.

Mitchell (2-3 overall) will next play a doubleheader against Waynesburg University on Thursday, March 5 at the RussMatt Invitational.
