Anna Maria Snaps Baseball's Streak

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Mitchell College baseball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end against Anna Maria College on Wednesday afternoon, falling 7-4 in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

Four Anna Maria pitchers combined to allow only six hits on the day, while the offense pounded out 12 hits against Mitchell hurlers. Steve Cochrane led the Mariners with two hits, including his first home run of the season.

Mitchell fell behind 2-0 in the second inning but cut the deficit in half thanks to Cochrane's solo homer in the third. The deficit was 3-1 in the fifth when an AMC throwing error allowed the Mariners to plate a pair of runs to tie the game.

In the top of the seventh, Mitchell briefly took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Dougie DelaCruz that scored Lelo Martinez to make it 4-3. However, the AMCATS answered with three runs in the home half to assume control. A single to left by James Powers pushed across the go-ahead run, and Aidan Calcaterra followed with a two-run single to provide some extra cushion for the home team.

The Mariners put a runner on base with two outs in the eighth but couldn't cash in. AMC closer Liam Cunningham retired the side in order in the ninth to nail down the save.

Mitchell's Jakari Pellegrini suffered the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits over 3.1 innings of work. He also struck out five.

Mitchell (5-2 overall) will next host Fisher College on Sunday, March 21 at noon.
