Baseball Tops Swarthmore, Falls to Baldwin Wallace

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team split games at the Snowbird Classic on Wednesday, picking up a 13-3 victory over Swarthmore College before dropping an 11-2 final to Baldwin Wallace University at Centennial Park.

Mitchell (3-4 overall) will next face Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday, March 10 at 4 p.m.

Game 1 – Mitchell 13, Swarthmore 3

The heart of the Mitchell lineup was locked in all game against Swarthmore. Bo Yaworski led the Mariners with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate that included two doubles and three RBI. Dougie DelaCruz went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI, and Hunter Yaworski chipped in two hits and drove in two runs.

Chris Gibbs picked up his first collegiate win on the mound. The rookie right-hander tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and struck out four while allowing only three hits.

Mitchell built an 11-0 lead before Swarthmore got on the scoreboard with three runs in the sixth inning. Hunter Yaworski supplied a two-run double in the second inning, and Bo Yaworski followed suit in the third. DelaCruz plated runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings, and he also doubled in the second.

Game 2 – Baldwin Wallace 11, Mitchell 2

After falling behind 5-0, the Mariners cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Hunter Yaworski plated the first run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Lelo Martinez later walked to force in another.

The Yellow Jackets pushed across six more runs but wouldn't need the added margin. The Baldwin Wallace pitching staff limited Mitchell to only five hits in the game, all of which went for singles.

Mitchell starter Eddie Kaftan (0-1 overall) went 5.0 innings but surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out six.
