Mariners Fall to #10 Rowan

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Fourth-seeded Mitchell College fell to top-seeded and 10th-ranked Rowan University, 7-1, in Friday's opening round of the Annville (PA) Regional at the 2022 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at McGill Field.

Mitchell (30-12 overall) drops into the loser's bracket and will play an elimination game against third-seeded Lebanon Valley College on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

The Profs took control early, pushing across five runs in the first inning on four hits and two errors. Anthony Schooley provided the big blow with a two-run double and later scored on a single by Trip McCaffrey.

Mitchell got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as Owen Robbins led off with a solo homer to left field. The long ball was his third of the year, as well as the first by a Mitchell player in NCAA postseason play.

Reliever Kenny Heon kept Mitchell in the game, but the Mariners couldn't close the gap against Rowan starter Eli Atiya. The Profs' left-hander struck out six over 8.0 innings and yielded the lone run on six hits.

Heon, who entered the game with two outs in the first inning, turned in the longest outing of his career. He allowed two runs on nine hits and tied a career high with eight strikeouts over 7.1 innings. Most importantly, his effort helped preserve the Mitchell bullpen for the remainder of the tournament.

Angel Galindez went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead Mitchell at the plate.
