Baseball Knocks Off Lebanon Valley at NCAA Regionals

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Fourth-seeded Mitchell College stayed alive in the Annville (PA) Regional on Saturday morning, topping third-seeded Lebanon Valley College by a 10-8 final at McGill Field in the 2022 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

Spurred on by an eight-run third inning, the Mariners held off the Flying Dutchmen down the stretch to earn their fifth NCAA victory in program history. Bo Yaworski led the charge at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBI while Angel Galindez and John-John Jose finished with three hits apiece.

Mitchell (31-12 overall) advances in the loser's bracket and will play an elimination game against either Washington & Jefferson College or Rowan University today at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that game will earn a spot in Sunday's title round.

The Mariners fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third but had an immediate answer. Mitchell loaded the bases with one out for B. Yaworski, who promptly tied the game with a three-run double. He later scored on a wild pitch to put the Mariners in front for good. Lelo Martinez and Justin Adorno each provided two-run singles to extend the lead to 8-3. In total, Mitchell sent 13 batters to the plate and pounded out seven hits to go with three walks.

Mitchell went to the bullpen in the fourth inning after LVC hit up Chris Gibbs for another run. Tyler Daly stranded a runner in scoring position to keep the lead at four, but an inning later he exited the game after being hit by a comebacker to end the fifth.

The Mariners got a run back in the bottom of the frame. After a pair of hit batters loaded the bases with two outs, Dougie DelaCruz drew a walk to force in a run to make it a 9-4 game.

Daniel Driscoll took the ball in the sixth inning and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam with minimal damage, getting a double play and pop up to limit the Flying Dutchmen to a single run. In the seventh, another double by B. Yaworski knocked in Mitchell's final run of the day and made it 10-5.

LVC didn't go quietly in the ninth, plating three runs to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs. Head coach Travis Beausoleil turned to Sam Majewski for the final out, and the senior right-hander delivered with a game-ending strikeout.

Daly (3-1 overall) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Both Gibbs and Driscoll worked 3.2 innings and yielded four runs each, and Majewski earned his fourth save of the season.
