Baseball Suffers Setback Against #11 Denison

PORT CHARLOETTE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team dropped their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 11 Denison University 10-6 in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at Centennial Park.

The Mariners fell into an early 5-0 hole, before a big sixth inning catapulted them back into the action. After Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) singled, scoring Martinez on an error by the Big Red. Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.) then singled to score Robbins, before Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) reached on an error and Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) singled home the tying run.

Denison would answer with one run in the sixth, another in the seventh, and three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

A triple off the bat of Robbins plated one run for Mitchell in the top of the ninth, but the comeback fell short.

Robbins, Adorno, and Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) all registered multi-hit games for the Mariners, who saw their season opening winning streak snapped at four games.

Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) got the start, tossing five innings and allowing five runs. George Viebrock came out of the bullpen for the Big Red and earned the win, allowing one earned run across three and one third innings.

The Mariners (4-1 overall) will look to bounce back on Sunday, March 12, when they play The College of Wooster at 11:00 am at Centennial Park.
