Baseball Caps Florida Trip with 20-7 Win

AUBURDALE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip with a 20-7 victory over Marymount University on Thursday morning at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.

Mitchell pounded out 13 hits and benefitted from seven walks and four Marymount errors. The Mariners limited the Saints to just five hits in the contest as pitchers Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.), Jadon Canelli (Northford, Conn.), and Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.), combined to allow just four earned runs across seven innings. Kaftan, a senior, earned the victory by tossing five innings of four run ball, while Canelli and Gibbs combined for two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

The Mariners (8-3 overall) went 6-3 in nine games in Florida and return home on a two-game winning streak while averaging over 10 runs per contest.

Mitchell scored early and often during their game against Marymount, plating nine runs in the top of the second inning, thanks in large part to RBI singles from Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR), Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.), and Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.), while Owen Robbins (East Lyme Conn.) added a bases clearing triple and even eventually scored on a passed ball.

After tacking on one more run in the third on a DelaCruz single, the Mariners pushed eight more across in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a Galindez double and a two run single off the bat of Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.). DelaCruz then added a two run homer in the top of the fifth to cap the scroing for Mitchell, his third of the season and 20th of his career.

Galindez finished the day 3-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. DelaCruz also added three hits and a walk, to go along with four RBI and three runs, while Robbins and Yaworski each produced multi-hit games as well.

Kyle Lewis suffered the loss for the Saints, lasting only one and a third inning and giving up nine runs, seven of them earned.

The Mariners will return to action on Tuesday, March 21, when they host Bridgewater State at 3:30 pm.
