Baseball Drops Two at Home Against Salve

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team saw their eight game winning streak come to an end at home on Sunday afternoon, dropping both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Salve Regina University, 12-5 in the opener and 15-7 in the nightcap.

The Seahawks pounded out 34 hits on the afternoon, never trailing the Mariners as they improved to 20-6-1 on the season. Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) suffered the loss in game one, surrendering eight runs in five innings of work. Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) took the loss in the second game for Mitchell, giving up six earned runs in one and two third innings.

The Mariners (24-6 overall, 8-0 NECC) return to action on Wednesday, April 19, when they travel to New Hampshire for a non-conference game against Keene State College.

Game 1 – Salve 12, Mitchell 5

The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead, plating six runs in the top of the first inning. Mitchell answered with one in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second, but a two run third inning gave Salve carried an 8-4 lead into the fourth inning. He Seahawks plated four runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win, highlighted by a pinch hit home run off the bat of Brandon Grover.

Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) led the Mariners with three hits, while Robbins had a team best two RBI.

Christian Homa went 3-4 and Tommy DelVecchio picked up his first win of the season for Salve.

Game 2 – Salve 15, Mitchell 7

For the second game in a row Salve took an early lead, scoring five runs in the top off the first off Mitchell starter Chris Gibbs. The Seahawks carried a 9-1 edge into the bottom of the sixth when the Mariners began to mount a comeback, scoring six runs to make it a 9-7 game. Unfortunately for the home team, Salve answered with four runs of their own in the top of the seventh and went on to complete the sweep.

Bo Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) and Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.) had three hits apiece for Mitchell, while Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) went 1-4 with a two run double in the big sixth inning for the Mariners.

Kyle Carozza came out of the bullpen to throw three and two third innings of one hit ball for Salve, earning his first win of the season. Christian Homa again powered the offense by going 5-6 with three runs and a pair of RBI.
