Baseball Falls to Division I Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team came up short against Division I Stonehill College on Wednesday, dropping an 8-4 decision in non-conference action at Lou Gorman Field.

After two scoreless innings, the Skyhawks broke through with six runs in the bottom of the third inning off Mitchell starter Camren Varney (Manchester, N.H.), highlighted by a three-run double off the bat off Trey Ciulla-Hall. Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) came on in relief to tame the Stonehill bats, working three scoreless innings to keep it a 6-0 game heading into the seventh.

Ciulla-Hall and Chris Roberti proceeded to hit RBI doubles off Mitchell's Kevin Vining (Wallingford, Conn.) in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 8-0 in favor of the home team, before the Mariners plated their first run of the game in the eighth when Angel Galindez (Carolina, P.R.) scored on a passed ball.

Mitchell refused to go quietly, however, rallying for three runs in the top of the ninth. The first of those runs came when senior Lelo Matinez (New London, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch, then Galindez laced a two-run single, scoring Justin Adorno (New Britain, Conn.) and Robbie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.).

Adorno went 2-2 with a double, two walks, and a run scored for Mitchell, while Galindez finished 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Varney was the losing pitcher, surrendering six runs in three innings of work.

Trey Ciulla-Hall powered the Skyhawks at the plate, going 2-4 with a pair of doubles, four RBI, and a run scored. Starting pitcher Max Brulport improved his record to 2-1 on the season, tossing five innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits and striking out four.

The Mariners (27-7 overall, 10-0 NECC) will return home for their final conference doubleheader of the year on Saturday, April 29, against New England College. This will also serve as senior day for the Mitchell College ball club.
