Baseball Has Winning Streak Snapped by Huskies

SANFORD, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball saw their four game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of Southern Maine 13-3 in eight innings in a showdown at the Russmatt Baseball Invitational at Sandford Stadium.

The Huskies wasted no time on offense, plating one run off Mitchell starting pitcher Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) in the top of the first, before adding two more on an RBI double by Kyle Douin in the second and another on a Jack LeBlond single in the top of the third.

The four run lead was short lived, however, as the Mariners battled back and cut the deficit in half when freshman Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and the next batter, senior Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.), belted a two run home run, the first of his collegiate career. The Mariners continue to chip away, pushing another run across when senior Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) reached first due to an error and came home on an RBI single by freshman Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.).

That was as close as the score would get, as the Huskies pounded out five runs in the top of the seventh, and four more in the eighth, while keeping the Mitchell bats silent.

After Sestokas lasted just an inning and a third, freshman Joshua Scamman (Rochester, N.H.) came out of the bullpen and was effective in his second appearance of the season, tossing four and one third innings of one run ball.

Clay Robbins picked up the win for Southern Maine, allowing just three runs in six innings of work, walking two and striking out seven. Carson Black and Matt Burnett threw one scoreless inning each in relief of Robbins.

Terni Jr. led the Mariners at the dish, finishing 2-4 with an RBI. The freshman has now hit safely in all seven games this spring.

The Mariners (5-2, 0-0 GNAC) will return to the diamond on Monday, March 11th, when they take on Webster University in a Russmatt Baseball Invitational game at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida. The Huskies (1-5, 0-0 LEC) play next on Monday, March 11th, against The College of New Jersey.
