Baseball Falls to #23 Webster in Florida

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team suffered a 10-6 setback against #23 Webster University on Monday evening in a non-conference game during the Russmatt Baseball Invitational played at Northeast Regional Park.

The Mariners wasted no time jumping on top, as senior Owen Robbins (East Lyme Conn.) belted a two-run home run in the top of the first off Webster starter Wes Cunningham. The Gorlocks answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame, but Mitchell's Cole Lallai (Coventry, Conn.) gave the Mariners the lead again in the top of the fourth, scoring freshman Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.) on a sacrifice fly.

Webster bounced back with two runs in the bottom of third, but the Mitchell bats pushed three runs across in the top of the fifth when Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and sophomore Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.) laced a two-run single to left field.

After Webster scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take 7-6 lead, the Gorlocks broke the game open when three runs came around to score after a single by Evan Evola in the eighth inning.

Freshman Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) led the Mariners at the plate, turning in a 4-5 day with one run scored. Adam Vartanian added a pair of hits and two RBI, while Cole Lalli went 2-3 an RBI and one run scored.

Senior Camren Varney (Manchester, N.H.) took the loss after surrendering six runs (three earned) across three and two third innings of work. After five pitchers saw action for Webster, Joel Arsenault worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up his first save.

The Mariners (5-3, 0-0 GNAC) have an off day on Tuesday, before returning to the diamond on Wednesday, March 13th, for a doubleheader against Spalding University.
