Blue Jays Soar Past Baseball

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team suffered a 21-2 setback against #9 Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference game in the Russmatt Baseball Invitational played at Lake Myrtle Park.

The Blue Jays pounded out 20 hits and held the Mariners to just three. Kieren Collins picked up his second win of the season, tossing five and two third innings of two run ball (both unearned), walking one and striking out three. Mitchell freshman Jacob Ditscher (Danbury, Conn.) was charged with the loss after allowing two earned runs across the first three and one third innings of the game.

The Blue Jays took control early when Dillon Souvignier ripped a two-run double off Ditscher in the top of the first inning. After a walk and a Mitchell error began the top of the second, Johns Hopkins made it a three run game when Alex Shane doubled to right-center, which brought home Caleb Cyr.

Mitchell countered in the third when Michael Gajda (New Britain, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third after a fielder's choice followed by an error, and came home to score on a fielder's choice by sophomore Adam Vartanian (Cumberland, R.I.).

After senior Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) singled through the right side to advance Vartanian to third, senior Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to trim the Mitchell deficit to one run.

That was as close as the Mariners were able to get, as Johns Hopkins added four runs in the top of the fifth, four runs in the top of the sixth, and 10 more in the seventh.

Isaiah Winikur collected finished with a team-high three hits, while Caleb Cyr went 2-2 with a home run, a walk, four RBI, and two runs scored.

Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.) went 2-2 with a walk for the Mariners, while Galindez registered the only other hit for the team.

The Mariners (7-4, 0-0 GNAC) are scheduled to conclude their spring break trip on Friday, March 15th, with a 5:00 pm non-conference game against SUNY Brockport.
