NEWPORT, R.I. – The #8 Salve Regina Baseball team pounded out a program record 27 runs in a 27-2 win over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Reynolds Field. The victory was the 11th straight for the nationally ranked Seahawks, while the Mariners have now dropped two in a row heading into their first conference game of the season.

Salve erupted for 14 runs across the first two innings, and held a 24-1 advantage after five innings. The Seahawks collected 23 hits as a team and held Mitchell to just five, as second baseman Christian Homa and third baseman Wil McCarthy recorded three hits apiece in the win. The Mariners plated one run in the top of the second when Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.), the reigning GNAC Player of the Week, belted a solo home run, his third of the season.

The Mariners scored once more in the top of the eighth inning when freshman TJ Wolf (Bayonne, N.J.) laced a two run single, good for the first hit of his collegiate career. Michael Ficocello (North Providence, R.I.), Michael Gajda (New Britain, Conn.), and Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) also registered hits for the Mitchell, while Lalli finished the day 1-2 with one RBI and one run scored.

Mitchell junior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs, although just two of those were earned.

Brayden Clark got the start and earned his first win of the season for Salve, allowing just two hits and one earned run.

The Mariners (8-6, 0-0 GNAC) will kick off conference play on Friday, March 22nd, with a home game against the Saint Joseph's College (ME), scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. The Seahawks (12-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) return to the diamond on Saturday, March 23rd, with a doubleheader against Husson University.
