Baseball Suffers Setback at John Jay

BRONX, N.Y. - The Mictchell College baseball team suffered a 9-2 non-conference loss to John Jay College on Wednesday afternoon at Houlihan Park, on the campus of Fordham University.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Bloodhounds broke out in the bottom of the second, plating four runs off Mitchell starter Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.). The Mariners got two runs back in the top of the third when senior Owen Robbins (East Lyme, Conn.) belted his team-leading third home run of the season, but the bats would remain dormant the rest of the afternoon. 

Junior Anthony Agosta hit a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fourth, increasing the Bloodhound's lead to 8-2, before an RBI single off the bat of John Spallin made it a 9-2 game in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) took the loss after surrendering four earned runs across one and a third innings of work.

Seniors Michael Gajda (New Britain, Conn.) and Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) had two hits apiece, while Owen Robbins finished 1-4 with a home run, two RBI, and one run scored.

Senior Michael Mauro went the distance for John Jay to get the win, allowing seven hits and two earned runs, walking two and striking out four.

The Mariners (17-8, 8-0 GNAC) will look to quickly bounce back when they host the University of Hartford on Thursday, April 11th, at 3:30 pm. The Bloodhounds (10-13, 2-0 CUNY) are scheduled to play at Lehman College for a conference twin bill on Saturday, April 13th.
