MURRAY SCORES 36 IN 90-89 WIN OVER SOUTHERN VERMONT

NEW LONDON, CT--The Mitchell Pequot's battled it out for a last second win, 90-89, in an Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) match up with the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College on Saturday at the Yarnall Athletic Center.  The win puts Mitchell at 3-19 overall and drops SVC to 5-16. This was the second meeting for the two teams this season; SVC won the first round by 11 at the Williams College Tournament (77-66). 

Sophomore guard Eric Murray (Waterbury,CT) was top scorer for the Pequot's putting up 36 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Sophomore forward Matt Bindner (Milford, CT) and freshman forward James Brogan (Terryville, CT) both contributed 11 points to the Pequot's win. Sophomore guard Michael DePaolo (Asbury, NJ) put up 12 points and junior guard Brian Marciniak (East Hampton, NY) added 10 points with 9 assists to the final score.

The Mountaineers had four players contributing double points. Sophomore forward Joe Karnik (Castleton, NY) had a double-double game putting up 21 points and grabbing 11 boards. Senior forward Nick Harrington (Brooklyn, NY) also had a strong game with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman guard Brendan Kordana (Adams, MA) put up 20 points and sophomore guard Emory Wheeler (Virginia Beach, VA) had 16 points with three shots from behind the arc.

Saturday's game was intense with seven lead changes and an action packed second half. With three minutes to go in the first half, a lay-up by Murray gave the Pequots a 12-point lead, the largest margin of the game. The second half of the game was thrilling and the stands were electrified. With two minutes to go in the contest, Mitchell trailed by five. Bindner hit a lay-up to make it a three-point deficit and Murray hit back to back lay-ups putting the Pequots ahead by one with 44 seconds on the clock. At 17 seconds, Murray went to the line and sunk both for a three point edge. The Mountaineer's countered with a two-pointer from Harrington with six seconds to go. The Pequot's grabbed a missed shot from SVC with three seconds remaining and held on for the win.

Mitchell College's next game is at Newbury College on Saturday, February 16 at 12:00. Southern Vermont College will play their next game at Green Mountain College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
