Men's Basketball Comes Up Short at SVC


BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team suffered a 91-71 setback at Southern Vermont College on Thursday night at the MAC. 

SVC's Lance Spratling reached the 1000-point milestone as he tallied 32 points to lift the Mountaineers to victory. He came into the game with 980 points and joined the 1,000-point club in the second half to help propel Southern Vermont's winning streak to four games. The Mountaineers improved to 9-5 overall (3-1 in the NECC) while the Mariners dropped to 1-12 overall (0-4 in the NECC).

Down 9-5 after six minutes of play, the Mountaineers went on a decisive 10-0 run to take the lead. With 5:50 left in the half SVC found itself with a comfortable 36-15 lead. SVC outscored Mitchell 42-30 in the first half behind 18 points by Spratling. The Mountaineers continued to score in the second half and did not let the Mariners cut the lead closer than eight points.

Taeshon Johnson scored 27 points and Ben Naaktgeboren tallied yet another double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds for SVC.

Junior Mercury Fiske and freshman Tim Quinn led the Mariners in scoring with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Junior Alex Vess chipped in with a team-high seven rebounds.

Mitchell returns home to face Wheelock College on Saturday, January 15 at 1 p.m.
