NEWTON, Mass. - The Mitchell College men's basketball team lost a 66-63 decision in overtime at Mount Ida College on Thursday evening.

Mount Ida outscored Mitchell (2-4 overall) 6-3 in the overtime period to clinch the victory. The Mariners shot just 1-for-8 from the floor in overtime but still had a chance to extend the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it fell short.

Senior Paul Jefferson scored a team-high 15 points while freshman Trace Lanson also finished in double figures with 11. The Mariners shot 38 percent for the game but made only 3-of-11 attempts from the free throw line.

Mitchell led 34-31 at halftime after lighting it up from long range over the opening 20 minutes. The Mariners shot 60-percent from beyond the arc, with Jefferson, Lanson and senior Terrance Fisher each contributing a pair of treys.

The Mariners led by 10 points with 10 minutes remaining following another three-pointer by Lanson. The Mustangs responded with a 9-1 run over the next 4:46 to make it a single-possession game.

Mount Ida finally tied the game at 60-60 with 1:07 remaining, but Mitchell had several chances in the final moments of regulation to go back ahead. The Mariners missed three shots and turned the ball over once during the final 67 seconds, and the game went to overtime.

Mitchell will open NECC play at home against Daniel Webster College on Tuesday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m.
