UMFK Races Past MBB


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Maine Fort Kent shot 59 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range in a 110-64 win over Mitchell College on Wednesday night in non-conference men's basketball action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

UMFK's Joe McCloskey led all scorers with 31 points on 13-for-20 shooting and added nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 25 minutes. He was also 3-for-3 from beyond the arc on the night. 

The Bengals had five other players score in double digits. Rosevelt Smith Jr. came off the bench to record a double-double of 19 points and 10 assists to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Benson Arogbo shot 8-for-9 from the field en route to 16 points while Stephon Bell added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Travis Harlin and Bobby Syvanthong rounded out the scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Hasani Williams and Justin Gordneer Morant netted eight points apiece to pace the Mariners. Domenico Santiago grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while Alan Morgan handed out five assists.

UMFK never trailed and built a double-digit lead just seven minutes into the contest. McCloskey did his damage in the post while his teammates raced out for easy points in transition. McCloskey had 21 points by the break as the Bengals led by a 61-32 margin.

The story was the same in the second half as UMFK continued to play an up-tempo pace. The Bengals took care of the basketball (11 turnovers) and consistently found the open man, finishing with 32 assists on 47 field goals. Syvanthong had seven assists while Arogbo and Bell each added four.

Mitchell (0-7 overall) will return to action on January 4 at Western Connecticut State University at 6 p.m. Maine Fort Kent (9-2 overall) will next play at Fisher College on Thursday, December 15 at 5 p.m.
