MBB Comes Up Short at DWC

NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team fell by an 85-50 final at Daniel Webster College on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference action at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Marquise Caudill notched a game-high 20 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds for the host Eagles, who led from wire-to-wire. He shot 9-for-16 from the field and was the only DWC player to reach double figures. Antwaun Boyd and Alex Cruz posted nine points apiece, Angelo Adon notched eight, and both Ray Farmer and Michael Campbell posted seven points each. Tommy Organ chipped in with a team-best five assists and three steals. 

Mack Bertram-Gregory led the Mariners (0-10 overall, 0-2 NECC) with 16 points off the bench, including three field goals from beyond the arc. Domenico Santiago just missed a double-double with a game-high 13 boards and nine points while Brayvon Young posted nine points with three steals. Alan Morgan dished out a game-best 10 assists to go with six points. 

DWC, which outrebounded Mitchell 44-35 and held a 34-22 scoring advantage in the paint, also helped its own cause by forcing 21 that resulted in 29 points. The Eagles shot 38 percent in the first half but heated up to finish at 62 percent in the second. In all, the DWC bench tallied 39 points to 22 for Mitchell. 

The teams were close over the opening eight minutes with Mitchell within two after a Morgan jumper (9-7) five-plus minutes in. A Young trey later kept the Mariners within five at 15-10 at the 12-minute mark. But the Eagles followed with an 11-2 run sparked by two Caudill layups and back-to-back threes from Adon and Cruz to open up a 14-point advantage, which later grew to as many as 18 before settling at 16 at the break (38-22). 

The Eagles continued to click over the opening five minutes of the second as the lead expanded to 25 (53-28) after another Caudill inside move. Mitchell followed with 15-3 run sparked by a pair from downtown by Bertram-Gregory that trimmed the lead to 56-43 with 12:06 remaining. 

Caudill again answered with a soft jumper from 10 feet, and Mikol Blake Green went inside to get the lead back to 17 with eight minutes remaining. DWC held Mitchell to seven points over that final stretch to push the lead back to 20.

Mitchell will next play at Wheelock College on Thursday, January 12 at 8:30 p.m.
