MBB Pulls Out Win at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Mitchell College men's basketball team escaped with a 70-68 victory over Newbury College on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference play at Pappas Gymnasium.

Newbury's Daivon Edwards missed a three-pointer as time expired, and the Mariners came away with their third league win of the season. Domenico Santiago finished with a team-high 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Hasani Williams added 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds while Geary McLeod chipped in with 12 points off the bench in 26 minutes.

Jeduan Langston paced the Nighthawks with a game-high 22 points while Edwards finished with 15.

Mitchell pulled ahead for good on a three-pointer by Brayvon Young with 2:38 to play. The Mariners had chances to put the game away but shot just 3-for-8 from the foul line in the final minute, allowing Newbury to hang around for a chance at the win.

Following a layup by Ato Botsio that cut the Mitchell lead to one with 7.8 seconds remaining, McLeod went to the line but converted only one of two attempts. On the final possession of the game, Edwards had a look from the left wing for the win, but his shot was off the mark.

The second half alone saw six lead changes and eight ties, while neither team saw a lead greater than eight in the entire 40 minutes.

Young finished with 11 points while Alan Morgan put up 13 points and seven assists.

The win bumped Mitchell to 3-13 overall (3-5 NECC) and puts them in a tie for the final playoff spot with eight conference games remaining. The loss dropped the Nighthawks to 1-14 overall (1-8 NECC) with seven NECC games left.

Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Thursday, January 26 at 6 p.m.
