MBB Secures Big Win Over Daniel Webster

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College led by as many as 18 points in the second half on the way to a 98-90 victory over Daniel Webster College on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Mitchell's Brayvon Young led all scorers with 27 points and shot 6-for-11 from behind the three-point arc on the night. Mack Bertram-Gregory went 4-for-8 from deep and poured in a season-high 24 points while Domenico Santiago notched his 11th double-double of the year with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Alan Morgan added 12 points and nine assists while Hasani Williams finished with 12 points and eight boards.

Antwaun Boyd led five Daniel Webster players in double digits with 21 points. Ray Farmer contributed 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Marquise Caudill recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards. Michael Campbell and Jared Harrington chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The biggest lead for either team in the first half was five points until a pair of free throws from Bertram-Gregory gave Mitchell a 38-31 advantage with just over a minute to play. Daniel Webster scored the final points of the period to cut the deficit to 38-33 at the break.

Eight minutes into the second half, Mitchell led by seven before using a 9-0 run to open up a double-digit advantage. The stretch started with consecutive threes by Bertram-Gregory and Young and resulted in a 67-51 lead with 11:29 to go.

The Mariners led 77-62 with 8:23 remaining when the Eagles made a comeback. A three by Boyd ignited a 10-0 spurt that was capped by a Harrington triple, making it a five-point game with 6:15 to play.

Young answered back with a three on Mitchell's ensuing possession, and Bertram-Gregory followed with a trey to bump the lead back to double digits. Although Daniel Webster eventually got it back to single digits in the final minute, the Mariners held on and closed out the win from the foul line.

The win was big for Mitchell's postseason aspirations. The Mariners (6-17 overall, 6-8 NECC) hold a 1.5 game lead for the final NECC postseason spot and can clinch a berth with a win in either of their final two contests.

Mitchell will next host Newbury College on Thursday, February 16 at 6 p.m. Daniel Webster (13-10 overall, 7-7 NECC) will next host Becker College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
