MBB Stays Unbeaten in NECC with Win at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Mitchell College men's basketball team picked up its third straight New England Collegiate Conference victory on Saturday afternoon with a 98-77 win over Newbury College at Pappas Gymnasium.

Domenico Santiago scored a career-high 33 points on 15-of-18 shooting and added 11 rebounds in only 27 minutes as the Mariners improved to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in league play. Alan Morgan continued his inspired point-guard play with a game-high 16 assists--one shy of his output from Thursday's win over Dean College--to go along with eight points and seven rebounds. Hasani Williams recorded a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds while Brayvon Young tacked on 18 points and shot 6-for-11 from three-point range.

Newbury's Jeduan Langston netted a team-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting while pulling in seven rebounds. Daivon Edwards added 17 points and six rebounds and Keith Hollman finished with a career-high 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Both sides came out of the gates quickly to a 12-12 tie in the opening 4:24 in what looked to be a run-and-gun game. The first half was highly competitive as neither side led by more than four points in the last 15 minutes. A 6-0 run at the end of the half gave the Mariners a 41-38 at the break. Santiago scored 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting in the opening half.

The Mariners started the second half on another 6-0 run which gave them breathing room and a 47-38 lead. The Nighthawks fought back to make it a one-possession game, but a 19-7 Mitchell run gave the visitors control of the game at 79-60. Young scored nine of his 18 during the span.

The Mariners, who shot 53 percent as a team, extended the margin to as many as 25 en route to the 98-77 road win. Mitchell has now shot 50 percent or better over the past three games, and its 28 team assists were a season high.

Mitchell will next play at Wheelock College on Tuesday, January 16 at 8:30 p.m.
