Santiago Named to Google Cloud Academic All-District Team
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College senior Domenico Santiago was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team on Thursday, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Santiago was one of five Division III players named to the first team in District 2, which is made up of all programs from the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia, along with the District of Columbia. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected next month.
Santiago becomes the third student-athlete from Mitchell and the first from the men's basketball team to earn Academic All-District honors. Former men's tennis player Rocco Devona '13 earned the distinction in 2012, followed by baseball player Kenneth Olszewski '15 in 2015. To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Santiago, a business administration major with a 3.57 GPA, is enjoying a stellar final season with the Mariners. Earlier this week he was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and was a repeat all-conference first team selection. He is averaging team highs of 17.6 points and 12.7 rebounds per game, and he leads the NECC and ranks fifth in the country in rebounding.
Mitchell (17-9 overall) is the fourth seed in the 2019 NECC Men's Basketball Championship. After a win over Southern Vermont in the first round, the Mariners will play at top-seeded New England College in the semifinals later today at 7 p.m.
