MBB Rebounds For Big Win Over CCNY

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team used a strong second half to post an 85-58 victory over the City College on New York on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The Mariners used a balanced attack to outscore the Beavers 44-23 over the final 20 minutes. Hasani Williams led the way with a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Matt Finke and Jalen Benson each chipped in 14 points while Dra Harrison added 13.  

Romello Rashad paced CCNY with a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds and five assists. Daniel Piszczatowski and Yassine Sakhi also scored in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Both teams played up-tempo to start the contest, trading baskets en route to a 20-20 gridlock after the opening 10 minutes. The Mariners then used a 7-0 spurt to pull in front for a stretch, with Harrison contributing five points from the line during the run.

The Beavers later rallied back to tie the game at 35-35 on a layup by Sakhi with 2:36 left in the half. The Mariners, however, ended the half with six straight points to lead 41-35 at the break.  

Mitchell opened the second half with a 10-1 run to seize control for good. Benson drilled a pair of three-pointers during the three-minute stretch that put the Mariners up 51-36.

The margin continued to expand as the half wore on, with the final score standing as both Mitchell's largest lead of the contest as well as the largest margin of victory of the season. The Mariners shot 48 percent from the floor and went 9-for-21 from deep. 

Mitchell held a commanding 28-4 advantage in bench scoring and got major contributions from Connel Henderson (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook), Marvin Baker (Navarre, Fla./Navarre) and Leonard Williams (Providence, R.I./Mount Pleasant). Henderson finished with eight points and three assists while Baker chipped in seven points and four boards. Leonard Williams contributed seven points, five assists and two steals.

Mitchell (2-6 overall) will next play at Anna Maria College on Friday, December 13 at 6 p.m. CCNY (0-10 overall) returns to action at home against Baruch College on Saturday, January 4 at 2 p.m.
