MBB Tripped Up at Florida National

HIALEAH, Fla. -- The Mitchell College men's basketball team suffered an 81-72 setback at Florida National University on Wednesday night at Bucky Dent Gym.

Four Mariners scored in double digits led by 13 points from Matt Finke, who also handed out a team-high five assists. Brendan Miller finished with 11 points and four assists while Connel Henderson and Marvin Baker each came off the bench to chip in 10 points. Kenneth Santos netted a game-high 24 points and added six steals to pace Florida National, which improved to 10-6 overall.

An early 10-2 run put Florida National in front for good, although Mitchell kept things close for most of the first half. However, the Conquistadors ended the half on a 9-0 run to extend the margin to 41-26 at intermission.

The Mariners trailed by double digits for much of the second half but eventually pulled within six with just over a minute remaining. Mitchell was then forced to foul, and Florida National put the game away from the charity stripe. The Conquistadors held an 18-8 scoring advantage at the line on the night despite attempting only four more freebies.

Mitchell (2-9 overall) shot 51 percent from the floor but committed a season-high 25 turnovers.

The Mariners will wrap up their Florida trip with a third and final game at Johnson & Wales (FL) University on Thursday, December 19 at 7 p.m.
