MBB Closes Semester with Loss at JWU

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team ended its Florida trip with an 83-75 loss at Johnson & Wales University (FL) on Thursday night in non-conference action at the Wildcat Center.

Matt Finke and Hasani Williams each netted 14 points to lead the Mariners. Williams also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season. Alfonzo Stokes came off the bench to round out the Mitchell players in double figures with 10 points.

Dante Pace led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor, one of four JWU players in double digits on the night. Vince Ventulan added a season-high 14 points against his former team and shot 6-for-8 from the field. Alex Doane contributed 13 points Tyler Poindexter had 11 points.

The Wildcats got off to a 10-2 start and never trailed in the contest. JWU's starters combined for 29 points in the first half as the home team led 34-29 at the break.

Mitchell cut the deficit to three early in the second stanza, but the Wildcats quickly built the margin to 10 by the 16-minute mark. JWU kept a comfortable lead the rest of the way as the Mariners failed to make a big run.

JWU ended the night shooting 52 percent from the floor (33-for-64) and went 12-for-33 from downtown (37 percent). The Mariners shot 28-for-66 from the floor (42 percent) and converted just 11 percent from three-point range (1-for-9). Mitchell outrebounded the Wildcats, 41-34, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Mitchell (2-10 overall) will next play at Connecticut College on Tuesday, January 7 at 7 p.m.
