Stokes Nabs Fifth NECC Rookie of the Week Nod

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mitchell College freshman Alfonzo Stokes was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the sport of men's basketball, as announced by the league on Monday morning.

Stokes averaged 3.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game last week as the Mariners wrapped up regular season play. He finished with five points, three assists and a steal in a win over Eastern Nazarene College that sewed up the second seed for the upcoming NECC Championship. Earlier in the week he scored two points and grabbed four rebounds at Elms College.

It marked the fifth time this season that Stokes has been recognized by the conference (Nov. 18, Dec. 2, Jan. 6, Jan. 21). In 21 games—all off the bench—he is averaging 5.1 points and 2.0 rebounds while logging 11.7 minutes per contest.

Mitchell (11-14 overall, 8-4 NECC) will next host a semifinal match-up in the 2020 NECC Championship on Thursday, February 27 at 7 p.m. The Mariners will face the winner of the first-round game between third-seeded Eastern Nazarene and sixth-seeded Becker College.
