MBB Slowed by Wesleyan on the Road

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team dropped their first game of the new year Wednesday evening, falling 83-63 against Wesleyan University in a non-conference showdown at Silloway Gymnasium.

The Mariners fell behind early and were unable to make up ground, succumbing to a Cardinals team that has now won seven games in a row.

Senior guard Mikey Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) poured in a team-best 16 for Mitchell, while also adding five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Kenny Lewis (Orlando Fla.) added seven points in the loss, and Robert Zirlis (Clinton, Conn.) and Jalen Benson (New London, Conn.) each finished with six points.

Wesleyan's Nicky Johnson led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed five rebounds and dished out six assists. Preston Maccoux helped lead a balanced Cardinals offense, contributing 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Gabe Ravetz also finished in double figures with 14.

The Mariners shot just 37.7% from the floor, 28.6% from three, but 86.7% from the free throw line. Wesleyan won the rebounding battle 40-27, which led to 42 points in the paint.

Mitchell (10-3) will be back in action on Saturday, January 14th, when they open conference play with a game against Lesley University at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Wesleyan (9-5) will host Connecticut College on Sunday, January 15th.
