Stokes Tabbed as NECC Player of the Week

MANSFIELD, Mass. -- Mitchell College senior Alfonzo Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the sport of men's basketball, as announced by the league on Monday morning. It marks the fourth time this season that Stokes has earned Player of the Week honors (12/12, 1/3, 1/30).

The senior guard averaged 25 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest, helping guide the Mariners to a 1-1 record on the week. Stokes began the week by scoring 22 points in a road loss to Westfield State. In that game, he also grabbed six rebounds, dished five assists, and notched a pair of steals, while shooting 87.5% from the free throw line.

The Mariners then returned to conference play on Saturday, downing Eastern Nazarene College 96-89 in their regular season finale. Stokes delivered a game-high 28 points on 52.9% shooting, and also finished with seven rebounds and six assists.

The Mariners (21-4 overall, 6-0 NECC) earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NECC Men's Basketball Championship, and will host Lesley University in a conference a semifinal game on Wednesday, February 22nd, at 6:00 pm.
