Stokes Earns All-District First Team Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches announced the 2022-2023 Division III All-District Teams and District Coaches of the Year on Tuesday, recognizing the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes and coaches in the division. The All-District honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division III.

Mitchell College senior Alfonzo Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) was one of 11 players recognized from Division 2, and one of only six players to land on the All-District First Team. It marks the second time in Mitchell's history that a men's basketball player has received regional accolades from the NABC, as Joshua Ford earned all-district second team honors in the 2013-2014 season.

Stokes, the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, averaged a NECC best 21.4 points per game for the Mariners. He added 5.3 rebounds, good for fourth best in the conference, and shot 49% from the floor, second in the NECC. Defensively, the senior was third in the league in steals, averaging 2.0 per game. During the season, Stokes became the sixth player in Mitchell's Division III era to eclipse the 1,000 career point milestone and scored in double-figures in all 25 of the Mariners games. During conference play, Stokes only upped his game, averaging 27.5 points and 6.8 rebounds on 58.9% shooting across six games. He added a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in the NECC championship game and was named to the All-Tournament team for his performance.

Stokes led Mitchell to a 23-5 overall record, the most wins in the program's Division III history. The Mariners went undefeated on their home court and 6-0 in league play en route to their fourth conference title. Mitchell also earned the NECC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season faced host Johns Hopkins University in the first round on March 3, falling 89-71 to a team that advanced to the 2023 Sweet 16.
