St. Joseph's of Maine beats Men's Basketball

STANDISH, Maine St. Joseph's of Maine held off the Mitchell College men's basketball team 72-67 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Monks improve to 14-9 overall and 10-2 in conference action while Mitchell drops to 7-16 overall and 4-8 in the GNAC.

Elijah Miller (Ellington, Conn.) had 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double for Mitchell. 

Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) was one of four Mitchell players in double figures leading the way with 15 points as Dontae Pollard (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) added 14 points while Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.) finished with 13 points for the Mariners. Lee added a game-high six assists.

The Mariners shot 39.4 percent (28 of 71) from the floor and connected on four of 15 from behind the arc while St. Joseph's was 26 of 59 (44.1 percent) making 11 of 26 from 3-point range.

Neither team could separate from the other in the first half, with Mitchell holding the largest lead for either team, 35-29 with 46 seconds left in the half. The Mariners led 35-32 at the half.

It was a one possession game as St. Joseph's led 52-49 with 9:18 left before the Monks used an 11-4 run to push the lead to 63-53 with 5:47 left in the game.

Mitchell is back in action on Tuesday at Rivier in a GNAC game at 5:00 while St. Joseph will play at Norwich on Tuesday at 7:00.
