First Day in the Books at NECC Men's Golf Championship

LITCHFIELD, N.H. – Babson College and Springfield College stand tied for first place after the first round of the 2012 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men's Golf Championship, held Saturday at Passaconaway Country Club.
Both the Beavers – the defending tournament champions - and Pride posted a 308, while Elms College was third at 310, Newbury College was fourth (335), Becker College fifth (343) host Daniel Webster College sixth (356) and Mitchell College seventh (384).
The tournament concludes on Sunday at the par-71 course which covers 6,855 yards.
Three student-athletes stood tied atop the leaderboard as Phil Rurak of Elms, Vijay Vasandani of Babson and Adam Ziewancz of Springfield each carded a 73.
Henry Fall of Elms (75) stood fourth, while both Wesley Tryhane of Babson and Tom Vollaro of Springfield were tied for fifth at 76.
Ten players in all carded below 80 in occasionally blustery conditions that deteriorated to showers as the day concluded. The first round showed a clear three-team race at the top as Babson, Springfield and Elms all placed three golfers in the top 10.
Adam Navarro led Newbury in eighth place carding a 78, Ryan Benson led Becker shooting an 80 tying him for 11th, Ryan Lewis paced Daniel Webster shooting an 84 to place him 16th, and Max Jewett led Mitchell shooting 91 to place 26th.
Babson is seeking its third title overall, having won the title in 2011 and 2009. Elms took the crown in 2010 while Springfield won the first NECC title back in 2008.
